A group of five parliamentarians in Bahrain, spearheaded by Dr Muneer Suroor, has introduced an urgent proposal aimed at strengthening enforcement against drivers who illegally use emergency lanes. The initiative focuses on protecting the yellow lane designated exclusively for ambulances, Civil Defence vehicles and other emergency responders.
The proposal emphasises technology-driven solutions to address the problem. The MPs recommend expanding the use of artificial intelligence-backed smart cameras across roadways to detect and document violations of emergency lane regulations. This enforcement approach aims to deter motorists from misusing lanes critical to emergency response operations.
The measure reflects growing concern about the safety and accessibility of emergency routes. By blocking these lanes, vehicles impede the ability of first responders to reach people in urgent situations. The introduction of advanced surveillance technology is intended to create accountability and improve compliance with existing traffic regulations.
